Why Visit

Why Visit Marrakech

Marrakech is where most Morocco trips begin, and for good reason. Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravid dynasty, the city gave its name to the whole country, and its walled medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inside the ochre-red walls you will find the theatre of Jemaa el-Fna square, a maze of souks selling leather, lanterns, spices and carpets, and palaces and gardens that show the city’s royal past. Outside them, the High Atlas Mountains rise less than an hour’s drive away.

Marrakech is also the natural base for the classic southern route over the Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and the dunes of Merzouga.

Things to Do

Top Things to Do in Marrakech

1Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk, with the Koutoubia minaret in the background, Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fna Square

The heart of the medina. By day it is all orange-juice stalls and storytellers; at dusk food stalls fill the square and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in Morocco.

2Lanterns and spices in a Marrakech souk

The Souks of the Medina

Lose yourself in the covered markets north of the square, organised by craft: dyers, metalworkers, leather and carpets. A local guide helps you find the workshops worth seeing.

3The illuminated Koutoubia Mosque minaret in Marrakech at night, the city's landmark during Ramadan evenings when the surrounding square comes alive after iftar

Koutoubia Mosque

The 12th-century minaret of the Koutoubia is the city’s landmark. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but the gardens around it are a calm place to start a walk.

4The grand tiled courtyard of Bahia Palace in Marrakech, one of the ticketed monuments factored into a Morocco travel budget

Bahia Palace

A 19th-century palace of painted cedar ceilings, zellige tilework and quiet courtyards, and one of the best places to see traditional Moroccan craftsmanship.

5Bab Agnaou, a historic 12th-century gate into the Marrakech medina, where cars must be parked outside since the old city is largely pedestrian-only

Bab Agnaou and the Kasbah

The carved stone Bab Agnaou gate leads into the Kasbah district, home to the Saadian Tombs and some of the medina’s quieter streets.

6Rooftop breakfast in Marrakech with hot-air balloons

Rooftop Views and Day Trips

End the day on a rooftop terrace as the call to prayer echoes across the city, and use Marrakech as a base for the Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley or Essaouira.

Plan Your Visit

Planning Your Time in Marrakech

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings.

Summer (June to August) is very hot in the middle of the day, so plan sightseeing for the morning and evening. Winter days are mild and sunny, but nights are cold, and the Atlas peaks are often snow-capped.

Getting There & Around

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) has direct flights from many European cities. Trains connect Marrakech with Casablanca in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, and with Rabat, Fes and Tangier.

The medina is mostly pedestrian, so cars stop at the gates. For trips beyond the city, a private driver is the easiest way to reach the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira and the Sahara.

Local Tips

  • Stay in a riad inside the medina for the most atmospheric experience.
  • Bargaining is normal in the souks: start well below the first price and keep it friendly.
  • Two to three days is enough for the city itself; add more if you want day trips.
  • Dress modestly in the medina, covering shoulders and knees.
FAQ

Marrakech Travel Questions

How many days do you need in Marrakech?

Two to three days is enough to see the medina, the main palaces and gardens at a relaxed pace. Add a day for each day trip you want, such as the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.

Is Marrakech a good starting point for a Sahara trip?

Yes. Most Sahara routes start in Marrakech, cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and continue via Ouarzazate and the Dades and Todra gorges to Merzouga. The drive is usually split over two days.

What is the best area to stay in Marrakech?

For atmosphere, a riad inside the medina near Jemaa el-Fna or in the Kasbah area. For a quieter, more modern base with larger hotels, Gueliz and Hivernage are good options.

Can you arrange airport transfers in Marrakech?

Yes. Private transfers, including from Marrakech Menara Airport, can be arranged as part of your trip. Contact us with your arrival details.
