Merzouga is about 550–560 km from Marrakech, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops. The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then runs east through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Tinghir to the edge of the Sahara.
Because the drive is so long, most travellers split it over two days and turn it into the best part of the trip: Aït Ben Haddou, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Dades and Todra gorges, and then a camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night in a desert camp.
| Stage | Distance | Driving time | Worth stopping for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka pass | ~110 km | 2–2.5 h | Mountain views, Amazigh villages |
| Tizi n’Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou | ~80 km | 1.5 h | The UNESCO-listed ksar |
| Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate | ~30 km | 30 min | Film studios, Taourirt kasbah |
| Ouarzazate → Dades Gorge | ~140 km | 2.5–3 h | Skoura oasis, Valley of Roses, the switchbacks |
| Dades → Todra Gorge | ~90 km | 1.5 h | The narrow canyon walls |
| Todra Gorge → Merzouga | ~200 km | 3–3.5 h | Tinghir palm oasis, first view of the dunes |
Times are driving only, and the stages include the detours into the Dades and Todra gorges, so they add up to more than the direct distance. With photo stops, lunch and a visit to Aït Ben Haddou, each half of the journey easily takes a full day.

A driver and vehicle at your disposal, with you choosing the hotels. Good if you want flexibility but not the stress of mountain driving. See our private driver guide.

Possible on good, paved roads, but the Tizi n’Tichka pass is slow and demanding and you should never drive it after dark. Read our driving in Morocco guide first.

The cheapest way to the desert, usually 3 days in a minibus with other travellers and a fixed schedule. Long days and little time at each stop.

Long-distance buses run towards Rissani and Merzouga, but the journey takes most of a day or night and you still need to arrange the camp. Check current CTM and Supratours timetables.

There is no airport in Merzouga. Errachidia, about two hours away, is usually reached via Casablanca, so from Marrakech it rarely saves time.
Day 1: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and Skoura, ending in the Dades Valley. Day 2: the Dades switchbacks, the Todra Gorge, Tinghir and Merzouga, arriving in time for a sunset camel ride and a night in camp.
Add a night in Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, or a second night in the desert. Most of our tours continue from Merzouga to Fes through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas, so you cross the country instead of driving back the same way.
If you are starting in Fes, see how to get from Fes to Merzouga, which is a shorter drive.
October to April is the most comfortable time in the desert. In summer, start very early and keep the camel ride for the late afternoon. In winter, pack warm clothes for the night in camp and check the Tizi n’Tichka pass after snow. See the best time to visit Morocco.
Fuel stations are frequent until Tinghir and sparser after. Carry water and snacks, and some cash for parking, tea stops and tips. Police checkpoints are routine and quick.
These private tours start in Marrakech, include a night in a desert camp near Merzouga and finish in Fes, so you never drive the same road twice.
About 550–560 km by road, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ouarzazate and Tinghir.
It is possible to drive it in one very long day, but most travellers split it over two days with a night in the Dades Valley, so they can enjoy Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges on the way.
Long-distance bus companies such as CTM and Supratours run services towards Merzouga and Rissani, but journeys are long and schedules change. Check current timetables before relying on one.
There is no airport in Merzouga. The nearest is Errachidia, about two hours’ drive away, and flights there usually connect through Casablanca, so driving is normally simpler from Marrakech.
For most visitors, a private tour or a private driver over two or three days. You get the stops on the way, a desert camp at the end and no stress on mountain roads.

Tell us your dates and where you want to finish. We will plan the drive, the stops and the desert camp, and reply within 24 hours.
