How It Works

What a Private Driver Does

A private driver in Morocco is a professional driver with a licensed tourist vehicle who stays with you for the whole trip or for specific days. You set the route and the pace: stop for photos on the Tizi n’Tichka pass, take an extra hour at Aït Ben Haddou, or skip a visit you are not interested in.

Your driver knows the roads, the best places to stop for lunch and how long each stage really takes. They are not a substitute for a licensed city guide inside the medinas of Fes and Marrakech, but they make the long distances between cities easy and safe.

All our tours are private and built around a driver, so this is the way we work every day.

Because the price is per vehicle, a driver often costs about the same per person as trains, taxis and transfers combined once you are three or four people, especially in the south, where there is no railway. Our Morocco travel costs guide compares the options in more detail.

Why Travellers Choose It

When a Private Driver Makes Most Sense

1. Your first trip to Morocco

No navigating medina traffic, unmarked junctions or police checkpoints on your own. You can simply enjoy the scenery.

2. Travelling with children

Stops whenever you need them, child seats arranged in advance and no luggage to carry between trains.

3. The Sahara and the south

Trains do not reach Merzouga, the gorges or Aït Ben Haddou. A driver is the easiest way to do the long desert drive in comfort.

4. Short on time

A driver can link places that are awkward by public transport, such as Fes to Chefchaouen or Marrakech to Essaouira, in one comfortable day.

5. Groups and families

Split between four or more people, the cost per person is often lower than you expect.

6. Airport arrivals

Someone waiting for you with your name when you land, even late at night.

FAQ

Private Driver: Questions

How much does a private driver cost in Morocco?

As a guide, around 85–140 € per day for a car or minivan with driver and fuel, and more for a premium 4x4 or a large group vehicle. The price is per vehicle, so it drops per person the more of you there are.

Is a private driver the same as a guide?

No. Your driver handles the road and shares local knowledge on the way, but in medinas such as Fes and Marrakech only licensed local guides can guide you. We arrange those separately when you want them.

Do I pay for the driver’s food and hotel?

On our tours, no: the driver’s meals and accommodation are included in the price. If you book a driver elsewhere, check this before you agree.

Should I tip my driver in Morocco?

Tipping is customary but up to you. Many travellers give the equivalent of 10–20 € per day at the end of a multi-day trip if they were happy with the service.

Can a private driver pick us up at the airport?

Yes. Transfers from Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes and Tangier airports can be the start of your tour or booked on their own.
