Quick Answer

The Short Answer

Merzouga is about 470 km from Fes, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving without stops. It is the shortest road to the Sahara from the north of Morocco, and a beautiful one: the road climbs through Ifrane and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, crosses the high plateau at Midelt and drops into the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves leading to Erfoud and the dunes.

Most travellers do it in one full day with stops and arrive in Merzouga in time for a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp, then continue to Marrakech through the gorges.

On the Way

Highlights Between Fes and Merzouga

1. Ifrane

A tidy mountain town of red roofs and parks, built in the 1930s and known for snow in winter. A short coffee stop is enough.

2. The Azrou cedar forest

Some of the largest Atlas cedars in Morocco, and troops of Barbary macaques that often wait by the road. Enjoy them from a distance and do not feed them.

3. Midelt

A high-plateau town between the Middle and High Atlas, known for apples and fossils, and the usual lunch stop.

4. The Ziz Gorges

South of the Tunnel of the Legionnaire, the road follows a dramatic canyon before opening onto the palm groves of the Ziz Valley.

5. Erfoud and Rissani

Fossil workshops in Erfoud and the old market town of Rissani, once the gateway to the trans-Saharan caravan routes.

Sunset in Erg Chebbi

Arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon, swap the car for a camel and watch the light change on dunes up to about 150 metres high.

Practical Tips

When to Go

October to April is the most comfortable season in the desert. In winter, snow can briefly close the roads around Ifrane and Midelt, and nights in camp are cold. In summer, the Ziz Valley and Merzouga are very hot. See the best time to visit Morocco.

Fes, Marrakech or Both?

The road from Fes is about two hours shorter than from Marrakech. The best plan for most people is to start in one city and finish in the other. See Marrakech to Merzouga for the other direction.

Local Tips

  • Leave Fes by 8 am to reach the dunes before sunset.
  • Bring a warm layer: the Middle Atlas and the desert nights are cold outside summer.
  • Keep cash for tea stops, fossils and tips.
  • Two nights in the desert make the long drive far more worthwhile.
