Chefchaouen, often simply called Chaouen, was founded in 1471 in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. Today it is famous for the blue-washed walls of its old town, which make every lane look like a painting.
After the bustle of Marrakech or Fes, Chefchaouen feels calm and easy to explore on foot. Its small medina is perfect for wandering, photographing and sitting in a café on the main square with the mountains above you.
Our guide Azzdine Yakoubi welcomes travelers in the blue streets of Chefchaouen and helps them discover its hidden corners. The town combines naturally with Fes on a northern Morocco route.

The joy of Chefchaouen is simply walking its blue lanes, stairways and doorways, especially early in the morning before the day visitors arrive.

The main square of the medina, lined with cafés and dominated by the red walls of the old Kasbah and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque.
The restored Kasbah has a peaceful garden and a small museum, and its tower offers views over the rooftops of the medina.
At the edge of the medina, the mountain spring of Ras el Ma is where locals gather and wash clothes, and a pleasant spot to cool down.
A short uphill walk from Ras el Ma leads to the Spanish Mosque, the best place to watch the sun set over the whole blue town.
A popular day trip into the Talassemtane National Park, with river pools, waterfalls and hiking trails, including the natural rock arch known as God’s Bridge.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) bring pleasant weather for walking and hiking.
Summer is warm and busy with domestic visitors. Winters in the Rif Mountains can be cold and rainy, so bring a warm layer.
Chefchaouen has no airport or train station; it is reached by road. It is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours from Fes and around 2 to 2.5 hours from Tangier.
The medina is car-free and best explored on foot. Comfortable shoes are a must, as many lanes are steep stairways.

Plan my tripThere are several explanations, from tradition to keeping houses cool and mosquitoes away. Whatever the reason, residents keep repainting the walls in shades of blue, and it has become the town’s signature.
One night is enough to see the medina and the sunset viewpoint. Two nights let you add a day trip to the Akchour waterfalls or simply slow down.
By road. The drive takes roughly 3.5 to 4 hours through the countryside and the Rif foothills. A private driver is the most comfortable option.
