Quick Answer

The Short Answer

Merzouga is about 550–560 km from Marrakech, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops. The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then runs east through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Tinghir to the edge of the Sahara.

Because the drive is so long, most travellers split it over two days and turn it into the best part of the trip: Aït Ben Haddou, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Dades and Todra gorges, and then a camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night in a desert camp.

The Route

The Route, Stage by Stage

StageDistanceDriving timeWorth stopping for
Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka pass~110 km2–2.5 hMountain views, Amazigh villages
Tizi n’Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou~80 km1.5 hThe UNESCO-listed ksar
Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate~30 km30 minFilm studios, Taourirt kasbah
Ouarzazate → Dades Gorge~140 km2.5–3 hSkoura oasis, Valley of Roses, the switchbacks
Dades → Todra Gorge~90 km1.5 hThe narrow canyon walls
Todra Gorge → Merzouga~200 km3–3.5 hTinghir palm oasis, first view of the dunes

Times are driving only, and the stages include the detours into the Dades and Todra gorges, so they add up to more than the direct distance. With photo stops, lunch and a visit to Aït Ben Haddou, each half of the journey easily takes a full day.

Ways to Get from Marrakech to Merzouga

1Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes on a private 15 days Morocco tour from Casablanca

Private desert tour

The most popular option: a driver, a comfortable vehicle, hotels on the way and the desert camp booked for you, usually over 3 or 4 days. You choose the pace and the stops.

2Private minivan transfer at departure in Marrakech

Private driver only

A driver and vehicle at your disposal, with you choosing the hotels. Good if you want flexibility but not the stress of mountain driving. See our private driver guide.

3The paved switchback road of the Tizi n'Tichka pass climbing through the High Atlas Mountains, the main route between Marrakech and Ouarzazate on a Morocco road trip

Self-drive

Possible on good, paved roads, but the Tizi n’Tichka pass is slow and demanding and you should never drive it after dark. Read our driving in Morocco guide first.

4Traditional Berber-style tents at a desert camp near Merzouga in the Sahara, the overnight stay included in most Morocco desert tour packages

Shared group tour

The cheapest way to the desert, usually 3 days in a minibus with other travellers and a fixed schedule. Long days and little time at each stop.

5A bilingual Arabic and French directional road sign at a rural intersection in Morocco, showing distances to nearby towns

Bus

Long-distance buses run towards Rissani and Merzouga, but the journey takes most of a day or night and you still need to arrange the camp. Check current CTM and Supratours timetables.

6A toll payment checkpoint on a Moroccan autoroute operated by Autoroutes du Maroc, where drivers pay by cash or electronic Jawaz tag

Flight plus drive

There is no airport in Merzouga. Errachidia, about two hours away, is usually reached via Casablanca, so from Marrakech it rarely saves time.

Plan the Days

Two-Day and Three-Day Plans

Two days: the classic split

Day 1: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and Skoura, ending in the Dades Valley. Day 2: the Dades switchbacks, the Todra Gorge, Tinghir and Merzouga, arriving in time for a sunset camel ride and a night in camp.

Three days or more: the relaxed version

Add a night in Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, or a second night in the desert. Most of our tours continue from Merzouga to Fes through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas, so you cross the country instead of driving back the same way.

Going the other way

If you are starting in Fes, see how to get from Fes to Merzouga, which is a shorter drive.

Before You Go

Practical Tips

When to Go

October to April is the most comfortable time in the desert. In summer, start very early and keep the camel ride for the late afternoon. In winter, pack warm clothes for the night in camp and check the Tizi n’Tichka pass after snow. See the best time to visit Morocco.

On the Road

Fuel stations are frequent until Tinghir and sparser after. Carry water and snacks, and some cash for parking, tea stops and tips. Police checkpoints are routine and quick.

Local Tips

  • Leave Marrakech by 8 am to enjoy Aït Ben Haddou before the midday heat.
  • Pack a small overnight bag for the desert camp; the main luggage usually stays in the vehicle.
  • A scarf or shesh is genuinely useful against sun and blowing sand on the camel ride.
  • Two nights in the desert make the long drive far more worthwhile.
